Diagram lesson summaries
Recognize direct opposition
White to move. Compare the kings on the e-file. The arrow from e4 to d4 shows a candidate sideways route; e4 and e6 mark the opposing kings.
White to move. The arrow from h1 to g2 begins the king’s shortest route. The marked a4, d4, and d1 squares describe the catching geometry without relying on color alone.
White to move. Arrows b5–b6, c5–c6, and a5–a6 show the forcing pawn advances. The marked a7, b7, and c7 squares identify the defenders. Published sequence: b6, axb6, c6, bxc6, a6.
